Fun Facts About Kips Bay New York City
1. Kips Bay Is Named for the Kip Family
The neighborhood takes its name from the Kip family, whose history in the area dates to the Dutch colonial period. NYC Parks records that Jacobus Hendrickson Kip established a farm along the East River in 1655, helping give rise to the name “Kip’s Bay.”
2. The Kip Family Built a Farmhouse Near Present-Day East 35th Street
The Kip family farmhouse stood near what is now East 35th Street. NYC Parks identifies it as the first known structure in Kip’s Bay and notes that it survived until 1851, making it the last remaining house from the New Amsterdam era.
3. The Kip Family Held Land in the Area for About 150 Years
After establishing their East River farm, the Kip family retained land in the area for roughly a century and a half. The property was gradually subdivided during the nineteenth century as Manhattan’s population and street network expanded northward.
4. The Battle of Kip’s Bay Took Place Here in 1776
On September 15, 1776, British forces staged an amphibious landing at Kip’s Bay during the American Revolution. American militia retreated, allowing the British to capture New York City and hold it for the remainder of the war.
5. The East River Once Reached Much Farther Inland
During the Battle of Kip’s Bay, the shoreline was farther west than it is today. NYC Parks notes that the East River widened into the bay near what would later become St. Vartan Park, illustrating how landfill and waterfront development dramatically changed this part of Manhattan.
6. St. Vartan Park Opened in 1905
New York City acquired the future St. Vartan Park site in 1903 after clearing tenement buildings from a full city block. The park opened in 1905 with a playground, running track, and recreational equipment intended to provide open space for local residents.
7. Part of St. Vartan Park Was Removed for the Queens-Midtown Tunnel
Construction of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel changed the park during the 1930s. A tunnel approach cut through the property, forcing trees, benches, and playground features to be relocated while reducing the total park area.
8. Bellevue Traces Its History Back to 1736
NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue traces its roots to a six-bed infirmary that opened in the New York City Almshouse in 1736. The hospital describes itself as the oldest hospital in America and today operates a major medical campus on First Avenue.
9. Waterside Plaza Was Built on Reclaimed East River Land
Waterside Plaza occupies a waterfront parcel composed of land reclaimed from the East River. The development was completed in 1974 and was designed around four residential towers connected to a central building containing retail, office, community, parking, and open-space uses.
10. Kips Bay Is the Site of a Major New Life-Sciences Development Plan
New York City approved zoning actions in 2025 for SPARC Kips Bay, a planned life-sciences and healthcare-oriented development in Manhattan Community District 6. The land-use actions included zoning changes and the establishment of a Mandatory Inclusionary Housing area.
